 Joseph Westwater

General Piano Studies  |  Jazz Studies | Composition and Theory

Joseph Westwater is a pianist, composer, and music educator with a diverse background in performance, production, and music theory. He studied Music Theory at Bellevue College and has continued his education through HarvardX courses focusing on composers such as Handel, Mozart, and Beethoven. Joseph’s musical work spans a wide range of styles and settings—from performing as a lounge pianist in Kingston, WA, where he played by ear and adapted to live audience requests, to composing, recording, and producing music for jazz ensembles, podcasts, and video projects. His original compositions and remix work have earned recognition in multiple MetaPop competitions, reflecting both his creativity and technical skill.

As a teacher, Joseph emphasizes a highly individualized and engaging approach to learning. Drawing from his own unconventional musical path—beginning with playing by ear and later formalizing his training—he tailors each lesson to the student’s goals, learning style, and interests. While he uses structured curricula like Faber Piano Adventures as a foundation, he frequently incorporates custom arrangements, improvisation, and ear-based learning to keep students motivated and curious. Joseph strives to create a supportive, low-pressure environment where students can build strong fundamentals, explore their creativity, and develop a lasting connection to music.

Outside of teaching, Joseph enjoys composing, producing, and collaborating on creative music projects, and continues to explore new styles and sounds through recording and sound design.
